Producers’ note:

Release date: 6/21/19
For more than twenty years we have made regular pilgrimages to Odense, Denmark, a fairytale of a city, where Hans Christian Andersen was born more than two hundred years ago. A block away from HC Andersen’s modest yellow house is the Carl Nielsen Concert Hall, home of the Odense Symfoniorkester (OS), with whom we have collaborated on dozens of recordings. We also associate Odense with our close friend Poul Ruders. As a young man, Poul studied organ in Odense, and during the past forty years the OS has performed and made first recordings of numerous Ruders scores. While we were writing the opera’s libretto, the OS’s CEO, Finn Schumacker, expressed interest in how The Thirteenth Child might be brought to Denmark. For starters we agreed to record the opera’s orchestral music, planning to add voices and chorus later. In January of 2018, a delegation from the Santa Fe Opera traveled to Denmark to meet with the OS, resulting in the two organizations becoming commissioners of the opera. The release of the present recording coincides with the The Thirteenth Child’s premiere production by the Santa Fe Opera (July and August of 2019), directed by Darko Tresnjak and conducted by Paul Daniel. The opera’s Danish premiere is scheduled for 2021.
We give heartfelt thanks to our recording’s chief engineer, Doron Schächter, for his insightful and devoted work. With Doron along side of our illustrious engineering team- Adam Abeshouse, Viggo Mangor and Silas Brown – bringing The Thirteeenth Child to life has been a privilege.
